Damn spacebirds!   :o

Saul's Edge of the Forest CD has a ton of 'em.  Just don't watch Hitchcock's The Birds before you listen to it.   ;)

Dirk Serries - The Origin Reversal + Disorientation Flow
These two albums, both released on Projekt, are similar in structure. Guitar looping, layering, and processing. Light atmospherics and truly beautiful stuff, but works best for me as background music. I must confess, I'm really excited by these new releases; I couldn't really connect with the music Dirk was releasing after 2004 or so. These recent releases hit the right spot for me.

Alva Noto - Xerrox, Vol. 3
This was getting some attention on the ambient listserv, so I decided to give it a try. Some of the tracks are amazing (2ndevol, Isola). Good pickup if you're into the experimental side of ambient.

I have been listening to - As Lonely As Dave Bowman - Monolith
Second album following after 'Pod' and exploring the world of 2001. I'm enjoying it a lot, will need to wait to see if I prefer it to the first release

Chris - You are exactly right with regards to the recent Dirk Serries albums.  I like his return to vidnaObmana style ambience.  I love ambient guitar so these two releases are right in my wheelhouse.  I actually didn't know about "Disorientation Flow" until I saw your post, so thanks for the heads up.

Other recent spins:

Alva Noto | Xerrox vol.3  -  Chris, you are right on this one too.  Some spectacular cuts on it & overall one of my favorite ambient albums of the year.

Marconi Union | Departures  - Good spacey ambient from Marconi Union who never disappoint.

Steve Roach | Skeleton Keys  -  I haven't really liked Roach's berlin school stuff in a long time but this one worked for me, I like it a lot.

David Cross & Robert Fripp | Starless Starlight  -  A collection of tracks that play off the song "Starless" from the King Crimson album Red.  The tunes are essentially ambient violin, loops & electronics with the occasional guitar noodling from Fripp.  I love the original track so much that it is great to hear this new take on that theme.

Purl--Stillpoint.  Ambient dub on the Silent Season label.  I am selling my copy, let me know if interested.  It's sold out already, 350 copies were pressed...

Dave: Thanks for the head's up on the new Marconi Union. I just streamed a bit of it and it sounds really nice. It also sounds quite different from what I'm accustomed. It doesn't seem to have their signature sound; it seems more acoustic and experimental. I like it a lot.

Darwin Raymond and Jacob Newman - Transitions
New from APK's dataObscura label. This was a nice surprise! Guitar-driven soundscapes that are glacial in pace, deep in their reverberation, and expansive in mood.

From Here to Tranquility Vol 2.  Silent label comp from 1993.  Lots of gems from some obscure ambient groups, plus a Namlook track and Robert Rich track.

Rapoon--Dark Zero.  Another great one harkening back to the analog days of the 90s. He's on a roll.  With the "ancient astronaut/alien" cover painting by Storey, and ghostly surreal sounds, this has much in common with the What do you Suppose: the Alien Question release from about 15 years ago.  A good mix of the strange and the beautiful.  On Estonian label Retortae, limited to 100 glass mastered CD's.  (Pretty pricey but worth it if you're a Rapoon fanatic).

Black Sabbath--Paranoid.  Been listening to this obsessively recently.  45 years old and it sounds amazing.  How great is Iron Man?!  As is the whole album.

Amaryllis Dream.  A side project of Ishq, very quiet Eno-like pieces with bird/nature sounds.  Deceptively simple music that could be accused of a "new age" vibe yet upon close headphones inspection it's like new age on acid.  Very deep and meditative.  One of 2015 highlights for me.

Ře - Unseed
Excellent glitchy ambient soundscapes from Fabio Perletta. This reminds me a lot of the flickering, crackling melodies that Porya Hatami is well known for.

Non ambient, car-trip listening:
Death in June - Brown Book + Nada
Sisters of Mercy - First, Last, and Always
Clan of Xymox - Medusa

Clan of Xymox--Medusa.  YESSSSS!!!!!  Quite simply one of the most perfect pop/rock albums ever made.  Songs that are not so much written as CHANNELLED (from the heavens above).  Ahhhhhhh.....

Ishq - Spring Light
Part of the 4-seasons series from Ishq. Most of these releases have seemed unremarkable to me, but this one has a nice meandering drifting quality that is conducive to daydreaming, relaxing, and reading. I suspect this is Matt noodling rather than composing, but that doesn't seem to detract from the work.
