i just picked up this cheapo, ($170), and can't believe how easy it is to use,
how many useful features it has, and how great it sounds=

so what are you guys using?

APK

I use the Edirol R-09, bought it when it was first released.
They have since upgraded it a bit.
I've been really happy with the thing. I take it everywhere.

I use the Korg MR1 - great sound, range of formats (MP3 to Bitstream) and pretty small too. Comes with a small stereo mic.

A bit pricey but was birthday and christmas present..

OOOps - unlike the size of the bloody picture. ???

Not my picture but I use something similar to this:

My old fashioned recorder is the Sony TC-D5 ProII Sorry for the huge shot , but it took me 30 minutes to get the picture to show up.    Harry (computer whiz!)
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kickboxing.

great entries so far folks-
ironically, i'm recording the rain and cars going by on my street in the city in Buffalo, NY right now;
sounds like a wonderful rainy summer night in the city to me-

Rain? I remember rain. We are in the middle of a SERIOUS drought. The idea of listening to rain sounds so wonderful about right now. It's 11:48 p.m. here and the temperature is 84' F.    Harry (glowing like a pig)

Cool, I used to have the Pro II as well but I sold it becuase it didn´t have the option to use Metal tapes (like TDK´s infamous MX-G) so I kept my TD-D5M instead. I use it mainly with a Crown SASS-P Mk. 2 stereo PZM microphone.

Analogue tape is indeed wonderful, used to use a friend´s Nagra IV-S2 a couple of times... gorgeous.

Let´s see if I can cough up a picture somewhere...

honestly, i don't use a mic with the zoom, (it has 4 capsule mics built in), but if you were to use a mic, i'd probably go omni-directional.

Very cool, sound devices makes some great portable recorders. My co-worker just bought their 8-track recorder, sounds amazing. It should considering it cost him 6 grand.  :P
Take care.

Here's my Maranz PMD-620 in action, recording a summer night soundscape with some really nice clinging sounds from a flock of sheep and an adjacent herd of cattle. All the animals had bells around their necks but the sheep and cows had different ones, which fit together nicely :). I even found a use for the recording in a dark ambient track...
