Man, don't even know where to start in posting new purchases lately; returned from San Fran about 2 weeks ago with at least 80, 85 discs, a couple box sets, etc., all from a splendid weekend haunting both Amoebas, Aquarius, Rasputin's, etc. Few fellow colleagues/friends seem to enjoy/want/have need to physically "record shop" at brick-and-mortars anymore, but it remains a passion of mine and often a sanctuary (if not a reminder of better times past) from life's many less enthralling daily rigors.

Happy 50th Darren. You're a youngster, I thought you were an older spacerocker!

Silly (maybe) question:

When do you have time to LISTEN to all this stuff??? Even with a desk job that allows me lots of listening time, I still got piles upon piles of newish stuff (that is sitting on piles of older stuff) not getting enough attention. How many hrs per day do you estimate are devoted to the actual listening? I'm still trying to think of ways to get in more "play" time. Possible ideas: install speakers in shower walls; sleep with one eye/both ears open, etc.etc.

Anyways, next trip to SF let's hang out and have a contest who can fill up their basket at Amoeba with the most stuff. It may be a close race.

I haven't been buying any music at all lately. Just the Emeralds albums many many weeks ago. I'm digging back deep into the little that remains of my collection and going over it with a fine tooth comb. It kind of feels good to get into things I barely gave attention to upon first purchase, and actually listen to them with new ears. I'm really finding out what I like and don't like. Until gainful employment is forthcoming, this is the way it'll be. That said, I did hold on to all my world music, so have been getting plenty of that. Can never get tired of Guqin. Though my love of electro/ambient is returning with strength. I think buying/having too much had reduced my appreciation for individual albums, and stifled my ability to discern quality...

Just bought the new Bryan Ferry CD Olympia, and downloaded the new Duran Duran All You Need Is Now.

In both cases, fantastic new albums from people who are past the 30 year mark of making great music (though both, especially DD, have had their low points in between).

I just bought a bunch of Robert Rich releases I'd either lost or not got yet. 'Numena+Geometry', 'Somnium' 'Bestiary', 'Illumination' and 'Atlas Dei'.

I think they're all great. 'Illumination' surprised me the most, though. It didn't get much attention when it came out, and I ignored it at its release because of the fact it seemed to be presented as a mere companion piece to a larger work of media. But it's one of the most unusual and beautiful Rich releases in a long time, imho.
