New Music Video Project
« on: November 14, 2020, 06:04:46 AM »
Hello Hypnos Forum,

It has been a while.  Hope this finds everyone well during these difficult times.

I want to stop by the Forum to share my new Video project.  During the initial lockdown in the US back in March from the pandemic I thought I would immerse myself in classic Arthouse movies from Directors such as Antonioni, Tarkovsky,  Bergman and Godard to name a few.  At that point I had not seen much from these directors and I was quite shocked that I had gone through 56 years of my life with never seeing a Tarkovsky film such as Stalker, or Mirror, Antonioni’s Trilogy: L’Avventura, La Notte and L’Eciisse or Bergman’s Persona.  Actually as a young photographer in my early twenties I did see Antonioni’s Blow Up…….anyway something clicked and for the first time it occurred to me that I could marry my music and my photography.  Certainly I have been very aware of Music for Films in the general sense and have always known how well ambient electronic music worked with the moving pictures though there are not that many examples of movies with this types of music.   Probably should start an Ambient Film music thread and see what we can come up with.

The project to date has 3 short video’s which have a working theme, ”A study in Isolation”.  They are experimental music videos and lean heavily towards video / media art and have nothing to do with the great directors and their films that Ive listed above.  Interestingly enough these Arthouse films are actually quite lacking in music as we know film music today.  Perhaps that’s just the point.

I have been thinking of also releasing the music separately.

Here are the links to my Vimeo channel.  Feels good to post here again.  Enjoy.

Hi Julio,

Will have a proper look at your work and comment here.

As you will have noticed, it's a pretty quiet place here nowadays  :)

Lovely stuff, Julio. Watching the videos now. It's amazing all the different moods you capture within the same piece. I will probably stream these to my TV just for fun and to enjoy the mood now that Fall is kinda-sorta making its way to California.

Here's a link to Julio's Bandcamp page https://digitalvoices.bandcamp.com/

Yes Pete I have seen that.....I stopped bye a few times during my absence and did not see much activity.  Mike Griffin keeps this forum up and running with APK and silence here could make it all go away. So it seemed important to me to get back on board and share, especially as I actually have something to share.  This place needs to be more than just an ambient archive.

Welcome back Julio. I missed your voice here. But that is life. We come and go, and some stay.

It is not that silent here if you look back the threads you missed. I posted some thoughts about music, attunement and gear, and we still have exchange about music we listen and our releases.
I soon will make a post about how my 30 year old Roland JD-800 got repared. A thing that was nearly impossible. David (Phobos) posted some great live performances here, and you may discover more when you look a bit through.
Mike relaunched the forum, and Chris is making really succesful music under the moniker Innesti now. Much happened between the silent parts in this forum.

I really enjoyed your new music and visuals. The last piece is my favorite one in both the music and the visuals. Are you the person we see in this film? :)

Hi Jana,

Thanks for taking the time to view and listen to the work. Im glad you enjoyed them.

Yes that is me in the last video "A Way through Silence".  As I mentioned the theme behind these videos are about being isolated (quarantined and lockdown).  Not necessarily in feeling but physically as restricting where and what could be photographed.  Basically that's inside my home as many of us have spent time.  Eventually there came a point where I turned the camera on myself for additional "human" material to video. Not really comfortable with seeing myself and I do not like selfies, at least of me, but I think this works in some odd way.

I will do a somewhat more technical post on this thread to perhaps encourage other musicians here to have a go at video making if they have not done so already.

Good to know that appearances here are deceiving.  I do remember Chris's first music release....Loved it.  I am fan of David /Phobos so I will look for that live performance.

Very strong work Julio !

Some beautiful light play and colour shifts / effects. A suitably 'colourful' set of soundtracks too.

It must have taken an age to create / render ?

Thanks for your kind words Pete and taking the time to view.

Ages is the word indeed.....I won't get too technical here as Im writing something with those flavors offline to post later but it is astonishing how a 10 minute video can take months to complete.  One can understand how some of those great directors I mentioned above only produce a handful of movies in their lifetime, early death and trying to source financing for "Art" as opposed to commercial ventures probably did not help.

The Life of Roses video I had to wait for the roses to wilt and fall apart and video them as they did so.  Ages.  Editing and making the videos flow, color grading, adding Fx, over doing it, under doing it and all of this will actually learning to use the editing software, oh and then there is the music which was written at the same time as videoing unless I already had a sketch of music to expand upon.  Rendering time is not too bad....about an hour and 20 minutes for 10 minutes of 4k video.  The real issue is playback even on my decently spec'd 2019 iMac.

It is actually a lot of fun and full of visual surprises. Putting music and moving pictures together is quite a unique experience.  There are many times that music should not be brought together with anything visual except what the music creates within ones imagination and ambient electronic music is certainly that type of music as we all love to put headphones on, close our eyes and drift.  However I am a very visual person so I can't resist.

Some technical backstories…..

Musically I have been using my Oberheim Matrix 12, Minimoog Voyager and Access Virus TI2 for some time now and this music was created mostly with these instruments and a splash of Nord 3 piano, a drop or two of Omnisphere and electric guitar with ebow.

All of the video’s have been recorded on an iPhone 11 Pro.  When I first thought about this project I was unaware of the major impact smartphone video had made….photography more so.  After doing research it turns out there is a vast community of smartphone creators and these two videos below convinced me this was the path to take and a very inexpensive way to go about it. I upgraded from an iPhone 6 Ive had for years to a new iPhone 11

Music video production

Actual Music video to the above.

Actual video to the above

Next step to fully realizing the iPhone’s cinematic power was to set it free from the phones native video peripherals and download an app called Filmic Pro.  This is really important and completely changes the video capabilities.  It is way too technical to get into here but if you are curious there’s a ton of info on what it does and how it works with your smartphone.

Next up was an anamorphic lens.  iPhone 11 lenses are extraordinary and Filmic Pro can crop the frames dimensions to that classic letterbox which is what an anamorphic lens does but the lens has a certain wide angle feel to it and then in direct light gives off those blue stripes  across the image.

Here is a list of links to equipment for smartphones I use:

https://beastgrip.com
https://www.shopmoment.com/lenses/phone-lenses

Now something to edit the video…..I will not deal with Adobe and their subscription so that rules out Premiere.  Enter Blackmagic’s Davinici Resolve.  This video editing software is as powerful as anything else out there and the company offers a free version that is about 20% less functional than their full licensed version.  FYI Blackmagic make the legendary Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, 4k & 6k

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/

This is a wonderful ongoing journey for me and has really broadened my music production and how I compose and each aspect, sonic and visual truly inspire one another.  I have posted this in the hope that musicians here will take a different look at that smartphone sitting next to them.  It was quite the discovery for me!

Julio,
Out of interest did you use that Log profile thing in Filmic Pro ? I admire your decision to use the iPhone. I have made some attempts with mine (standard 11) and found it to be not great in anything other than good light (which is what you'd expect) Looking with interest at the 12 Pro Max now  :)

I have used the Log profile but not much.  What I see is as important to how I see and the insipid super desaturated Log profile is a creativity killer for me when Im recording video.  I realize these log profiles give color grading much more room for control but I don't want to color grade first and then edit. The decisions I make when editing are very much effected by the color not just content and duration of a clip.

In stills photography I have always sought to have the finished picture when I released the shutter.  That was the way it was with film so the limitations of making a print in the darkroom were not pushed.  I carry this attitude over into video.

These three videos posted here were all recorded using filmic pros's dynamic setting......completely over the top glorious saturation.  Actually I did not really know any better and it worked for this type of abstract video production.  Right now I have tamed it down and am using the natural setting.

There is a technical ethos that is not too iPhone friendly imho and that is to acquire the "film look" ones aperture setting should be twice the frames per second speed so that would be 24 fps @ 1/48. This gives motion the blur of film and prevents the staggered appearance but outside in good light using Filmic pro and the lowest ISO setting the image is completely blow out.  Enter the neutral density filter.  It is the only way to compensated.  I have a variable ND filter that goes from 1 to 9.  Outside here in Florida it stays on 9 because light is intense, even grey days.   This could be an issue for bigger cinema camera and DSLR's as well but Im not there yet.

There always does seem to be video noise with my iPhone 11 Pro and certainly more so in lowlight situations but for me Pete I have just sort of accepted it because of the very small sensor and I did buy noise reduction software because in the free version of DaVinci Resolve the noise reduction Fx is disabled.  It is supposed to be very good but is only available with a full license which at $299 is quite reasonable I think.  Anyway the third party software does work well and smooths out noise/grain.

The new iPhone 12 does have some tasty specs and with a trade in of your iPhone 11 it should not be too expensive an upgrade.  For myself I think I will hang onto the 11 and probably upgrade to a dedicated cinema camera in the future....

These videos are fascinating, it is truly amazing what can be done with a phone nowadays. If only Alexander Graham Bell could have known how his invention would evolve over time ;)

The music to the three videos is beautiful and fits the videos perfectly, and yes you should release the music separately.
It was also nice to actually see you as well.
Outstanding work.

Take care and I hope there will be more videos and music to follow.

Hello David,

Thank you for your special words and your acknowledgment that the music could stand by itself. This means a lot!

Because of the constant push and pull between the visuals and the sonic's I find its a challenge to be equally critical of both. There is so much overshadowing and enhancement from each other that were each aspect to stand by itself it might not measure up, if that makes sense.

Your "An October Evening" dvd has such powerful imagery and beautiful dark music.....works so well.  You should have a look at Tarkovsky's Stalker if you haven't already.  Have you made any more videos to go with your music?

I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos.

Hi Julio,
Having listened to the music again but this time purposely not watching the videos, I found they stood on their own perfectly, and I was able to conjure up my own thoughts and visions by taking hints from the titles you gave to the pieces, I am sure others will find this too if they listen to the music on its own. You have managed something that is not always that easy to do, produce a work accompanied by visuals that works brilliantly as one, but can also be just as rewarding without the visual side.  8)

I did play live at Awakenings in October 2019 but I only released the music from that event without the visuals from my backdrop. But you never know, I might put the album up on You Tube with the backdrop video one day, if I ever find the time ;)

Ohh and you have a PM

David, thanks for listening so deeply. I am grateful for your insightful perspective.

I listened to your live performance...thank you.  I need to have more plays to absorb the complexities of your soundscapes.
There are many subtle nuances at work that suggest hidden sonic delights just out of ear shot so to speak and require further discovery. Perhaps one can get it on the first listen but for myself the music calls me back again to hear it with concentrated attention or just casually in the background so yes you should definitely make the video of the performance available. I recall a video you posted here of a live performance I believe in the UK a while back....I really enjoyed this along with great respect for you and anyone who takes ambient music into a live performance.

Just catching up on some of this, Julio. Great work! I am looking forward to spending some more time watching (and listening).
